World Oceans Day

June is a pretty special month, we honour and observe World Environment Day (05 June), World Oceans Day (08 June) and Youth Day (16 June). This year’s world oceans day theme ties so strongly into so many of these celebrations and the visions those passionate about youth and the environment hold dear.

When we consider life and livelihoods it speaks to our past, our present but also the urgent and inherently deep reflection about our future. What will we have left as part of our lives and livelihoods if we do not honour our natural world today and everyday in big and small ways?

We’re looking forward to sharing more about ocean life and livelihoods, for now, we want to chat about the many friends, family and students who came out to help us at a Kalk Bay harbour this past Saturday.

On World Environment Day, we honoured and celebrated World Oceans Day in advance by hosting a land and ocean-based clean up event alongside our friends from Trail Freedivers. The turn out was incredible and as a team we are left so inspired and optimistic about the future of our oceans and other natural spaces.

“It’s one of the biggest turnouts in a while, especially since Covid-19 put us on the backfoot. It really shows that what we as STBP are doing still matters and not only to us but others too”, said Juneid.

A few words from Chris and Tash Krauss, “What an incredible turn out. This was probably our most thorough clean, with many hands on deck a lot of small plastics were collected. The students from Rylands High School even got down in the sand to pick up small pieces of glass. It was such an incredible experience to see how many people came out to the beach, together we made a really great impact. We are constantly inspired seeing all the kids and adults get fully stuck in.”

As a team we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every friend, diver, student and community member who joined us. We are so thrilled to have you contribute to a positive impact, especially in honour of our environment and ocean. We look forward to expanding our impact, and seeing you at our annual birthday clean up event on the 24th of July.

Keep an eye on our social media for statistics and other updates on our events, programs and the humans making it all possible.
